contentionの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 contentiō（争い・競争）＝ contendō（張りつめる・力を尽くす）+ -tiō（動作や結果を表す名詞）。英語では contend（争う・言い張る）+ -tion と読める。
kom-（共に）+ tend-（伸ばす） が芯で、「互いに引っ張り合う」**のが原義。ここから「争い・不和」と、法廷などで力をこめて押し通す「主張」という二つの顔が出た。It is my contention that 〜（〜というのが私の主張だ）は後者である。
a bone of contention（争いの種）・point of contention（争点）が定番。*tend- の仲間 tension（張り）・extend（伸ばす）・intense（張りつめた）と並べると、緊張感のある語だと分かる。
