ラテン語 intentiō(緊張・集中・努力)は、intendō(伸ばす・注意を向ける・目指す)からできた語。*en-(中へ)+ *tend-(伸ばす)というイメージで、意識や努力をある対象へ伸ばし向けることが原義。そこから「目指すこと・意図・目的」、さらに場合によっては「打算」へ意味が発展した。
名詞を作る -tiō(動作・過程・結果) に注目すると、intention は「注意や努力を向ける行為・結果」と覚えられる。同族語の intend は「意図する」、intense は「力を内側へ張りつめた→強烈な」、extend は「外へ伸ばす」で、tend を見たら『伸ばす・向ける』と読むのがコツ。
