古英語 mynd（思考・記憶の能力）が mind になった。考えたり覚えたりする内的な働きを表す名詞から、何かに注意を向ける「気にする・注意する」という動詞の用法も発達した。
印欧祖語 *men-（考える）と結び付くため、mind の中心には「頭の中で考える」というイメージがある。mental（精神の）・mention（心に思い浮かべて話す→言及する）・memory（記憶）などを連想し、mind は思考・意識・注意をまとめて表す語と覚えるとよい。
