sub-（下に）+ conscious（意識のある）で、subconscious は自覚している意識の表面より下にある、という作りをもつ。自分でははっきり意識していなくても、感じ方や行動に関わることを表す。
a subconscious fear は「自覚していない恐れ」、the subconscious は「潜在意識」。理由をうまく言葉にできないのに、ある場所を避けてしまうような場面を思い浮かべよう。意識の表に出ていない心の働きとして、接頭辞 sub- と結び付けられる。
