覚え方
ラテン語 intendō（伸ばす・注意を向ける・目指す）= in-（中へ）+ tendō（伸ばす・向かう）。意識や力を何かの方向へ伸ばし向けることが、原義のイメージである。intendō の形 intentus から、英語 intent が生まれた。
そこから intent は「心を向けたもの」→「意図・目的」となり、さらに目標へ集中している「専念した・注意深い」という意味にもつながった。intention（意図）・intend（意図する）・attentive（注意深い）と関連づけ、tent を見たら「向けて伸ばす」と覚えるとよい。
中へ向かう *en- の感覚を加えると、intent は「意識をある対象の中へ向けて伸ばす」語として理解できる。
