day（昼間）+ light（物を見えるようにする明るさ） で「太陽から届く自然の光」。電灯の光と区別して、昼のあいだ空から差す明るさを指す。

day の背後の *dʰegʷʰ-（燃える・熱い）、light の背後の *lewk-（明るい・輝く） はどちらも光と熱のイメージで、lucid（明晰な）・illuminate（照らす）も後者の流れ。「日の光」そのままと押さえればよい。

補足: daylight saving time（夏時間）、in broad daylight（白昼堂々と）が頻出。see daylight は「先が見えてくる」。

*dʰegʷʰ-燃える・熱い
英語では day（day・today）、foc（focus・focused）、fever / febr（fever・afebrile）、fuel / fus（fuel・fusil）、dear / dar（dear・darling）、dwind（dwindle・dwindling）などの形で現れ、熱・燃焼から「昼・日」「熱」「火を集める場所」や、そこから派生した価値・親愛の意味へ広がる。
*lewk-明るい／輝く／見る
本来語の light（light・highlight・twilight）、ラテン語系の luc・lus（lucid・translucent・illustrate）、lumin・lun（luminous・lunacy）、ギリシャ語系の leuk（leukemia）で現れ、「光る」が核。
