dense はラテン語 dēnsus（密に詰められた・きつく圧縮された）から来ています。すき間なく押し込まれた状態が原義で、物質についての「密集した・密度の高い」という意味になりました。霧や雲のように、向こうが見えにくいほど詰まったものにも使われます。
