slow は古英語 slāw（のろい・怠惰な）がそのまま続いた語で、意味もほぼそのまま「遅い」に引き継がれている。

形容詞の「遅い」だけでなく、slow down（速度を落とす）のように動詞としても使われ、「テンポやスピードを落とす」という意味に自然に広がった。
