disaster（大きな被害をもたらす出来事）+ -ous（〜を持つ） で「破滅的な」。disaster はイタリア語 disastro（災害・大惨事）= dis-（離れて・分かれて）+ astrum（星・星座） で、原義は「星回りが外れた状態」である。
運命は星の並びが決めるという占星術の考え方が下敷きで、悪い星の下に置かれた＝ひどい目に遭う、という発想。astrum の芯 *h₂eHs-（乾く・燃える） は燃える天体のイメージで、astronomy（天文学）・astronaut（宇宙飛行士）・asterisk（星印）・star（星）と一族である。
