フランス語 fibre（細い糸状のもの） から入った語で、原義そのままに「繊維」を指す。植物の筋、布や紐の一本一本の糸、生体の筋繊維・神経繊維など、細長く伸びるものが基本。
そこから工業・医学・食品と分野ごとに訳語が分かれる。optical fiber（光ファイバー）、dietary fiber（食物繊維）、carbon fiber（炭素繊維）。比喩の moral fiber は「人格を織りなす繊維」＝精神力・気骨。
綴りはアメリカ式が fiber、イギリス式が fibre で、中身は同じ語。形容詞は fibrous（繊維質の）、生化学の fibrin（フィブリン）も同じ一族である。
