フランス語 fabrique（工場・製造所）から英語に入った語である。工場で材料を組み立てて作ったものという感覚から、まず「織物・布」を指し、そこから物が組み立てられた「構造・組織」という意味にも広がった。
fabric は布そのものだけでなく、社会や物体を形作る組み合わせにも使える。the fabric of society は「社会の構造」、a fabric of cotton は「綿の布」。fabric は、材料を組み合わせて作られたものと覚えると、布と構造の両方をつかめる。
