中英語 lynnen = lyne（亜麻の）+ -en（「〜製の」を表す語尾）。もとは「亜麻でできた」という形容詞だった。
その形容詞が名詞として独立し、亜麻布そのものを指すようになり、さらにシーツ・タオル・テーブルクロスなど布製品一式（bed linen、table linen）へ広がった。
-en は wooden・golden・woolen と同じ語尾。亜麻を指す line は linseed（亜麻仁）にも残っている。
