覚え方
five（五）+ -th（序数を作る） で「五番目の」。古英語 fīfta（五番目の） の形をそのまま引き継いでいる。
綴りで注意したいのは five → fifth と v が f に変わる点。twelve → twelfth と同じ交替で、-th の前で音が濁らなくなる。同じ形は分数にも使われ、one fifth は「五分の一」。
その他 the fifth floor（五階）、Beethoven's Fifth（交響曲第五番）、音楽の a perfect fifth（完全五度）。序数と分数は同じ -th 形とまとめて覚えるとよい。
