hand（手）+ set（一組）の複合語。手に持って使う一組の装置、つまり送話口と受話口をひとまとめにした電話機の握り部分を指して「受話器」になった。
そこから、手に持って通話する機器そのものを指す使い方に広がり、今では携帯電話の端末を handset と呼ぶ。通信業界では端末メーカーを handset maker と言う。
hand を前に置いて「手で扱う」を示す複合語には handbook（便覧）・handrail（手すり）・handbag（手提げかばん）が並ぶ。
