jesterの語源と覚え方

中英語の gestour が元の形で、末尾の -our はラテン語 -ātor（動詞から行為者を表す名詞を作る語尾）に由来する。今の英語では jest（冗談を言う）+ -er（動作主を表す）と読める形になっている。
jester は中世の宮廷に仕えた道化師で、冗談や皮肉で主人を楽しませる役目を負った。court jester がその正式な呼び名。
同じ jest からは jesting（ふざけた）も出ている。
