ラテン語 follis（ふいご・空気を入れた革袋）が fool の起源で、もともと「中に空気が入って膨らんだ袋」を指す語だった。
「中身が空気ばかりで軽い」というイメージが「頭の中身が軽い人＝愚か者」に転じ、動詞では人を「担ぐ・騙す」という意味の fool にもなった。
