gooseの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 gōs（ガチョウ） がそのまま続いた語。母音が入れ替わって複数形は geese になり、tooth/teeth・foot/feet と同じ古い型を残している（× gooses）。
慣用句が多い語でもある。a wild goose chase（当てのない無駄骨）、cook someone's goose（相手の望みを打ち砕く）、goose bumps（鳥肌）、What's good for the goose is good for the gander（一方によいことは他方にもよい）。動詞では「不意に尻をつつく」「一気に加速させる」という口語がある。
ガチョウは古くから身近な家畜だったため、こうした言い回しが数多く残った。実用上は 複数形 geese と、鳥肌 goose bumps の二点を押さえておけば足りる。
