limelightの語源と覚え方

lime（石灰）+ light（光）。石灰を強く熱すると出るまばゆい白光のことで、19 世紀の劇場ではこれを舞台照明に使っていた。
照らされるのは舞台の中心に立つ役者である。そこから limelight は「注目を浴びる場所」の意味になり、in the limelight（脚光を浴びて）、steal the limelight（注目をさらう）が定着した。日本語の「脚光を浴びる」と発想がぴったり重なる。
lime の背後には *h₂leyH-（塗る）があり、「壁に塗るもの＝漆喰」という捉え方が元にある。果物の lime（ライム）はこれとは別系統の語なので、混同しないこと。
