覚え方
mask のもとは、西ゲルマン祖語の「網目」である。煤やほこりを吸わないように網を顔にかぶった習慣から「仮面」の意味が生まれたとされ、中世ラテン語 masca、イタリア語 maschera、中期フランス語 masque を経て英語に入った。
同じ語からきた mesh（網目）と並べ、顔にかぶる網と考えると綴りから思い出しやすい。
顔を覆う物から広がって、動詞では「隠す」を表す。mask the smell（においを隠す）のように、顔以外のものを覆い隠すときにも使う。
