古フランス語 desguiser（姿を変える） から。des-（〜でなくする）+ guise（装い・見せかけ） で、「本来の身なりから外す」が原義である。
外見を作り替えて正体を隠すことから、動詞「変装する」、名詞「変装・見せかけ」、さらに事実や感情を「取り繕う・隠す」意味へ広がった。guise を見たら「外に見せる姿」と読み、その dis- が「別人に見せる」と押さえるとよい。
補足: in disguise（変装して）、a blessing in disguise（不幸に見えて実は幸運なこと）が定番の形である。
