ministerの語源と覚え方
覚え方
minis はラテン語 minus（より小さい）で、比較を表す ter が付いた minister は「より下の者」、つまり従者・使用人のこと。主人に仕えて役目を果たす人、という像が芯にある。
そこから、神に仕える「牧師」、国政の職務を預かる「大臣」へ広がった。上に立つ人ではなく、務めを託されて仕える人という見方が残っているのが要点。ministry（省庁・聖職）も同じ流れで、prime minister は首相、foreign minister は外相。動詞の minister to は「世話をする」。
