ラテン語 executivus（執行の・実務の）は、execute と同じく、命令や計画を最後まで実現する働きに関係する形。語の背景には、外へを表す *eǵ- と、ついて行くを表す *sekʷ- があり、決定を実際の行動へ追っていくイメージがある。
executive は、単に考えたり決定したりするだけでなく、それを外へ出して実施する側を指す。そこから、法律や政策を実施する行政部門や、会社の経営を実際に動かす幹部・経営陣という意味になった。
executive は「決定の後について行き、実行まで担当する人・部門」と覚えるとよい。executive decision（経営上の決定）や chief executive（最高経営責任者）では、実務を動かす立場が意識されている。
