ラテン語 prōficiō（進歩する）、その形容詞 prōficiēns（進歩している）から proficient が生まれた。prōficiō は prō-（前へ）+ faciō（作る・なす）、つまり「前へなし進める」という構造である。仕事や技能を前へ進められる人、というイメージから「熟練した・堪能な」になった。
prō- の核 *per-（前に・通り抜ける）と、faciō の核 *dʰeh₁-（置く・なす）を押さえよう。proceed（前へ進む）や proficient は「前へ進める」、factory・facility は「作る・なす」側の語として、pro- は前進、fac は作ると読むと覚えやすい。
