覚え方
古い語形 prōvorsus（前へ・公然と）が示すのは、飾り立てずに前へ進む、直接的な表現のイメージ。そこから prose は、韻律や詩の形式に縛られず、普通の文としてまっすぐ書かれた「散文」を指すようになった。
prose を poetry（詩）と対比して覚えるとよい。prose は話や考えをそのまま前へ進める文章、poetry は韻律などの形式を伴う表現と整理すれば、「通常の文章表現」という意味を思い出しやすい。
