ラテン語 rebellis（反逆的な・反抗する）= rebellō（反旗を翻す・再戦する）+ -is（〜の性質をもつ形容詞を作る）。もともとは「再び戦う者・戦争を再開する者」という意味から、反乱を起こす人や反逆的な人を指すようになった。
英語の rebel は、名詞では「反逆者・反乱軍」、動詞では「反乱する・反抗する」。rebellion（反乱）・rebellious（反抗的な）も同じ仲間で、bel／bell を見たら、戦いや反抗を連想すると覚えやすい。
