覚え方
responsible は、ラテン語 respondeō（質問に答える・応答する）と、その形 respōnsus に由来する。re-（後ろへ・再び）+ spondeō（約束する・保証する）という組み合わせから、問いかけや約束に答える義務を負う人、つまり「責任のある・説明責任を負う」人を表すようになった。
spondeō の背景にある *spend- は、供物を注いで誓約するイメージを持つ。respond（応答する）、response（応答・反応）、sponsor（保証人）も同じ連想で、責任とは、約束や問いにきちんと応答することと覚えられる。
