ラテン語 prūdēns（思慮深い・慎重な）から。中身は 「前へ（*pro-）＋見る（*weyd- 見る）」、つまり先を見通したうえで動く態度である。
現代英語でも 「軽率でない・慎重な・賢明な」。It would be prudent to check the contract first.（まず契約を確認するのが賢明だろう）のように、感情を抑えて損得と危険を見積もる場面に合う。金融では prudent investment（堅実な投資）、prudential regulation（健全性規制）という言い方をする。
