古フランス語 riban（リボン・帯）に由来する語。ribbon は、飾りや結び目に使う細長い帯を指す。日本語の「リボン」と結び付けながら、結び終えた形だけでなく、結ぶ前の細長い帯そのものも表すと押さえよう。

tie a ribbon は「リボンを結ぶ」。a ribbon of road のように、道が細く長く続く様子を帯に見立てることもある。幅の狭いものが、長く伸びているという形を覚えておくと、布以外のものに使われたときにも意味を捉えやすい。
