totally は total（全部の・完全な）＋ -ly（〜に）。「全体にわたって・完全に」という副詞で、ある状態や判断が部分的ではないことを強調する。a total change が「全面的な変化」なら、change totally は「すっかり変わる」。同じ total が、名詞を説明するか、動作を説明するかで形を変えている。
totally different は「まったく違う」、totally empty は「すっかり空の」。I totally agree. なら「全面的に賛成だ」と、同意の強さを伝えられる。会話では Totally! だけで「まったくそのとおり」と返すこともある。反対の内容にも付けられるので、totally wrong は「完全に間違っている」。全部に当てはまるという感覚を保ちながら、何の状態や判断を強めているかに注目しよう。
