two は「二・二つの」で、古英語の twā（二）を受け継ぐ基本の数詞。tw- という綴りは、twice（二度・二倍）、twin（双子）、twenty（二十）などにも見つかる。音だけでは結びつきが見えにくい語も、綴りを並べると「二」に関わる仲間として覚えやすい。
two books は「二冊の本」。two の後ろに数えられる名詞を置くと、普通は books のように複数形になる。There are two left. なら「二つ残っている」で、何の二つかが分かっていれば名詞を省ける。数を表す two、回数や倍率を表す twiceと役割を整理するとよい。two times と言える場面でも、twice a week のようなまとまりを覚えると「週二回」まで自然につながる。
