中英語 wherfor から。where-（どこ・何）+ for（〜のために）で、「何のために」＝なぜ、そしてその答えとしての「理由」。
where- の頭は疑問を表す *kʷ- で、what・who・why と同じ。there- を使った therefore（それゆえ）は同じ作りの対になる語。
Wherefore art thou Romeo? の wherefore は「どこにいるの」ではなく「なぜ（その名なの）」の意味で、この古い用法が今もよく引かれる。
