ラテン語 aura（そよ風） の借用。目には見えないが、そこにあると感じられる空気の流れが原義で、そこから「人やものから漂ってくる独特の空気」＝雰囲気・オーラになった。
aura の背後には *h₂ews-（夜が明ける）があり、夜明けとともに立つ風のイメージ。同じところから aurora（曙・極光）や east（東）も出ている。aur- を見たら「明け方・立ちのぼるもの」。
医学では、てんかんの発作や片頭痛の前に感じるちらつき・においなどの前兆も aura と呼ぶ。「本体の前に漂ってくるもの」という感覚は共通している。
