back（手の甲側）+ hand（手）に -ed が付いた形。手の甲を相手側に向けて振る動きを指し、テニスの backhand（バックハンド）がその代表。

比喩では「まっすぐでない・裏のある」となり、a backhanded compliment（褒めているようで嫌みな言葉）が最もよく出会う形。手のひらではなく甲で打つ＝正面からでないと押さえれば、皮肉の意味にそのままつながる。
