中英語 bifore（〜の前に）から。古英語 beforan にさかのぼり、中身は be-（bi- ＝ そばに）+ fore（前に・前方に） で、「すぐ前のところに」が原義。
位置の「前」と時間の「前」を一語でまかなうのが特徴で、stand before the door（ドアの前に立つ）も before noon（正午前に）も同じ before。前置詞・接続詞・副詞のどれでも使える（before dinner / before I go / the day before）。
fore の仲間は forehead（額）・forecast（前もって見積もる→予報）・foresee（予見する）。ago は「今から前」、before は「その時点から前」を表す点で使い分ける。
