覚え方
古英語 bezt（すべての中で最も良い）がそのまま英語 best に受け継がれた語で、good（良い）の最上級として使われてきた。
「あらゆるものの中で最も良い」という原義がそのまま残り、best は形容詞「最高の」、副詞「最も」、名詞「最良のもの」、動詞「打ち負かす」として使われる。
best はもともと good とは別の語形から発達したとされる、英語によくある不規則変化の一例である。best はそのまま「一番良い」と覚えればよい。
