ラテン語 capitāneus（首位の・主たる）から。caput（頭・先端）+ -āneus（〜に関する形容詞をつくる） で、「頭に当たる者」。
「頭」＝集団を率いる者なので、船の船長、軍の大尉、スポーツチームのキャプテン、警察の警部と分野ごとに階級はばらばらでも、その集団の頭という芯は共通。動詞で「率いる」。
