ラテン語 carō（肉） の系統の語で、イタリア語 carnagione（顔色・肌の色） と同じ流れ。carō（肉）+ -ion（状態を表す名詞をつくる） と読めば「肉の色みを帯びたもの」という組み立てが見える。
もとは「肉の色＝淡い紅色」を指す色名で、その色の花がカーネーションと呼ばれるようになった。いまは母の日に贈るナデシコ属の香りのよい園芸花を指すのが普通。
carnal（肉体の）・carnivorous（肉食の）と同じ carn- の仲間。carn- は「肉」、その色の名が carnation とつなげると忘れにくい。
