もとは劇の筋が一気に反転する終幕、悲劇の破局を指し、そこから現実の「大惨事・破局」になった。a natural catastrophe（自然災害）、economic catastrophe（経済の破綻）。
「状況がひっくり返る」が像だと押さえると、単なる disaster より「取り返しのつかない転落」という重みが強いことも納得できる。形容詞は catastrophic。
