古英語 clingan（固着する・縮む）から、cling は物にぴったり付く「付着する」、人や物が離れまいとして「しがみつく」という意味になった。過去形 clung は、強く付いた状態や、何かに頼って離れない動きを表す。

印欧祖語 \u002agley-（登る・しがみつく）にも、手足をかけて上へ進みながら離れないイメージがある。cling は「くっついたまま離れない」と覚え、clung はその過去形としてまとめるとよい。
