cloud（雲）+ -y（〜の性質を持つ）。もとをたどると古英語 clūdiġ（岩の多い・丘の多い）で、clūd（岩・丘）が「雲」を指すようになるにつれ、その形容詞も「岩だらけの」から「雲の多い」へ移っていった。
中英語 cloudy の段階で「曇った・濁った」の意味が定着し、今では空模様だけでなく cloudy water（濁った水）・a cloudy explanation（要領を得ない説明）にも使う。
共通の芯は透明さが失われていること。cloudy（曇りがちな性質）と clouded（覆われた結果）を並べ、-y は性質、-ed は結果と押さえると使い分けやすい。
