フランス語 culte（崇拝・信仰） から入った語。もとは神々への「祭祀・礼拝」を指す中立的な語だった。
今は「狂信的な信奉集団」という否定的な意味が強いが、a cult film（カルト映画）、a cult following（熱狂的なファン層）のように「少数の熱心な支持者を持つ」の意味でも広く使う。
culture（文化）・cultivate（育てる）と同じ流れにあり、「手をかけて敬い育てる」から「崇拝」へ、とつなぐと覚えやすい。
