toll は、もともと道や橋を通るときに払う通行料金を表す。古い英語の ang
(税金・通行料・手数料)から、通行の代価という意味が受け継がれている。そこから、何かを得るために支払う大きな代償という比喩が生まれ、「犠牲・損失」の意味にも広がった。death toll(死者数)は、事故や災害がもたらした「犠牲の総数」と考えるとよい。鐘を鳴らす toll は別の用法なので、通行料・犠牲の toll と混同しない。
