覚え方
中英語 daschen（打つ・突進する・砕ける） から。名詞 dasch（強打） に不定形を作る -an が付いた形で、物が勢いよくぶつかって砕ける、その激しさが原イメージである。
「叩きつける」から「勢いよく走る」（dash to the station）、「打ち砕く」から dash one's hopes（希望を打ち砕く）、さらに「さっと少量を振り入れる」a dash of salt（塩ひとつまみ）へ広がった。句読点のダッシュも、紙面にさっと引かれた一撃という感覚である。
補足: 陸上の 100-metre dash（短距離走）も「一気に駆ける」から。dashing（さっそうとした）は、その勢いが人物評に転じた形。
