disrupt（中断させる・混乱させる）+ -ive（〜しがちな） で「秩序を乱すような」。disrupt の奥には *Hrewp-（壊す・引き裂く） があり、続いている流れを途中で引き裂くという像が中心にある。
教室や会議で流れを乱す a disruptive student（授業を妨害する生徒）のように否定的に使う一方、ビジネスでは disruptive technology / disruptive innovation（既存の秩序を壊す革新）と肯定的にも使う。壊す対象が「悪しき現状」なら褒め言葉になる、という使い分けである。
