distillationの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 distīllātiō（滴り落ちること）= dēstīllō（滴り落ちる・蒸留する）+ -tiō（行為や結果を表す名詞を作る）。「しずくが一滴ずつ落ちる」が原義で、蒸気を冷やして滴として集める作業がそのまま語になった。
化学・酒造の「蒸留」が中心。fractional distillation（分留）、the distillation of whisky。比喩では「余計なものを落として要点だけを取り出すこと」で、a distillation of years of research（長年の研究の精髄）のように使う。
一滴ずつ落として純度を上げるという像を持っておくと、比喩用法もそのまま読める。動詞 distil（米つづり distill）、産物の distillate と合わせて覚えるとよい。
