ラテン語 distorqueō（ねじ曲げる）= dis-（ばらばらに）+ torqueō（ねじる・回す）。あちこちへねじって形を崩すこと。

そこから distorted は「歪んだ」。顔つき、音、画像のほか、事実を曲げる場合にも使い、a distorted account は事実をねじ曲げた説明。

torqueō の系統には torque（ねじる力）・torture（体をねじる責め→拷問）・contort（ねじり曲げる）・retort（ねじり返す→言い返す）がある。tort は「ねじる」。
