ラテン語 distorqueō（ねじ曲げる・ゆがめる）は、dis-（ばらばらに・二つに）+ torqueō（ねじる・曲げる）と分けられる。まっすぐな形をねじって、元の姿から外れさせるのが原義である。
そこから物の形を「歪める」だけでなく、事実や発言を自分に都合よく「曲解する」という意味にも広がった。distortion（歪み・歪曲）や distorted（歪んだ）も同じ仲間で、torque を見たら、ねじって形を変えると覚えるとよい。
