覚え方
twist は中英語 twist（関節・蝶番・分岐点）と結びつく。関節や蝶番は、二つの部分をつなぎながら向きを変える場所であり、そこから twist＝つなぎ目でひねる・ねじるという動きが連想できる。
物体や布をひねる動きから、形を歪めること、さらに話や事実を「曲げて伝える・歪曲する」ことへ意味が広がった。一本のものが途中で向きを変え、別の方向へ進むイメージである。
twist を「蝶番のように向きを変える」と覚えると、twist a wire（針金をねじる）、a plot twist（筋の急な展開）の両方を理解しやすい。
