artfulの語源と覚え方
覚え方
art（技・技巧）+ -ful（〜に満ちた） で「技巧に満ちた」。褒め言葉として「巧みな」にもなるが、実際には「小賢しい・ずる賢い」という含みで使われることが多い。
art のもとは *h₂er-（組み合わせる・接合する）で、ばらばらのものをうまく組み上げる技のこと。article（一つ一つの項目）・order（並び・秩序）・harmony（調和）が同じ流れ。-ful の *pleh₁-（満たす）は full（いっぱいの）・plenty（豊富）・complete（満たし終える）と同じ。
artful は褒めるより皮肉に傾く語で、ディケンズの登場人物 the Artful Dodger（狡猾な逃げ上手）が典型。素直に「芸術的な」と言いたいときは artistic を使う。
