古英語 godsibb（名づけ親・洗礼の代父母） から。god（神）+ sib（血縁者）、つまり 「洗礼によって結ばれた縁者」 で、これが中英語 godsybbe を経て、まず「親しい間柄の人」を指すようになった。
親しい者どうしの気安いおしゃべりは、やがて他人の私事の取り沙汰へ移る。今の gossip は名詞で「うわさ話・ゴシップ」、動詞で「うわさ話をする」。gossip about ~（〜をうわさする）、a gossip column（ゴシップ欄）、the office gossip（社内のうわさ好き。人も指す）。
god の芯は *ǵʰew-（注ぐ） で、供物を注いで呼びかける相手という発想。「洗礼の縁者 → 親しい仲間 → その内輪話」の三段で覚えると、いかめしい由来と軽い現代語がひと続きになる。
